On June 16, 2025, over 100 residents from Moo 5 and Moo 6 in Kue Wiang Subdistrict, Dok Khamtai District, Phayao Province, were reported to have suffered from severe food poisoning symptoms, including stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea, after consuming red pork rice distributed at a local funeral.

According to affected villagers, the red pork rice was prepared by the funeral host and handed out in approximately 700 meal boxes to guests attending the ceremony on the evening of June 15. Within two hours of consumption, many began experiencing symptoms such as abdominal cramps, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. Several individuals were in critical condition and required emergency medical assistance.
Public health officials have attributed the mass illness to possible food contamination, likely due to bacterial infection or spoilage, exacerbated by the recent extreme heat. They issued a warning that hot weather increases the risk of foodborne illnesses and advised the public to exercise caution in food preparation and storage, particularly during the summer months, to prevent similar incidents in the future.
