International news agencies reported a tragic bridge collapse on Sunday, December 22, 2024, linking the states of Tocantins and Maranhão in northeastern Brazil. The incident resulted in four fatalities and left more than four people missing. Several trucks plunged into the river, carrying thousands of liters of pesticides and sulfuric acid, raising significant environmental and safety concerns.
The situation remains unclear regarding the extent of chemical leakage from the containers, as authorities have yet to assess the full impact. The search operation for the missing persons has been temporarily halted, as the diving team is awaiting further evaluation of the situation before proceeding.
The Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira Bridge, which spans over 500 meters in length, was constructed in the 1960s and crosses the Tocantins River. It serves as a vital route linking the states of Tocantins and Maranhão.
A total of 8 vehicles fell into the river when the bridge collapsed, including 3 chemical tankers. Authorities have warned residents of the cities of Itaerito and Aquiranópolis, which are on opposite banks of the river, to avoid using the river water for consumption.
Rescue teams have been using boats to search for survivors. As of now, they have recovered the bodies of 4 victims, including a female truck driver and an 11-year-old girl. One man was successfully rescued from the river on Sunday.
